Special Interest Classes
Animal Husbandry
Penrith Farms is home to several species: honey bees, poultry, horses, llamas, dogs, cats, and April the Donkey. Clients develop many life skills caring for the animals: responsibility, teamwork, and commitment. In addition to the opportunity for vocational enrichment, countless studies have demonstrated remarkable therapeutic benefits associated with animal contact and care.
Art and Photography
Penrith Farms' Art program utilizes a number of forms of visual
expression such as drawing, painting, sculpture, photography,
pottery, beading, knitting, and crochet. Many of our clients are
able to discover a new talent or develop those they already have
when they immerse themselves in an artistic project.
Automotive and Small Engine Maintenance
Clients have an opportunity to learn basic auto mechanics. Penrith Farms offers numerous projects year-round, including basic vehicle maintenance and small engine repair. All work performed in the auto shop is supervised by an experienced mechanic.
Computers
Penrith Farms' computer lab allows the clients to gain skills, explore interests in programming, web design, blogging, graphic arts, and writing and even take online classes.
Culinary Arts
Clients
with an interest in the culinary arts are presented with prospects for learning
about cooking and baking skills from highly experienced individuals. Clients
will prepare meals using a variety of cooking methods including: wood-fired
stove, open-flame, and conventional appliances.
Horsemanship
The Penrith Farms Horsemanship Program teaches the clients to be in harmony with the horse by learning first horse handling safety and then how a horse thinks. The clients are taught a balanced way of riding that can apply to any horse and exercises that will keep a horse sensitive and responsive to a rider.
Woodworking and Construction
Penrith Farms operates a fully equipped woodworking facility. Clients gain knowledge of basic carpentry skills as they design and create projects for use individually or communally. A journeyman carpenter and cabinetmaker with 30 years of experience continually supervises the woodshop to ensure safety and quality.
