Penrith Farms - A Therapeutic Community for Young Adults

VOCATIONAL PROGRAM

Penrith Farms offers a variety of vocational training opportunities. The skills learned in these areas have been shown to improve a client’s knowledge base, work ethic, self-efficacy, and self-esteem.

ORGANIC GARDENING PROGRAM

Clients have an opportunity to work with one of Penrith’s most valuable resources, a 50’ X 25’ state-of-the-art, hand-built greenhouse, which operates on a year-round basis. In the winter and inclement months, the greenhouse is heated by wood stove and uses 1000-watt high-pressure sodium lights for illumination and additional heat generation.

Adjacent to the greenhouse, a 10+ acre garden area provides the opportunity for additional organic food production during the spring and summer months. Clients will master organic gardening techniques, ranging from simple to sophisticated, as they create gourmet quality produce. Many of the best restaurants in Spokane, Washington and Sandpoint, Idaho, including Paprika's and Solstice, feature Penrith’s quality produce.

Working in the greenhouse and garden gives our clients a rewarding sense of accomplishment, as they contribute to the production of organic produce – from seed, to harvest, to the gourmet restaurant menu. It is traditional for clients to celebrate birthdays or other milestone events at restaurants serving Penrith’s produce, thus contributing to their sense of pride and fulfillment.

WOOD SHOP

Penrith Farms operates a fully equipped woodworking facility. Clients gain knowledge of basic carpentry skills as they design and create projects for use individually or communally. A journeyman carpenter and cabinetmaker with 30 years of experience continually supervises the woodshop to ensure safety and quality.

AUTOMOTIVE & SMALL ENGINE SHOP

Clients have an opportunity to learn basic auto mechanics. Penrith Farms offers numerous projects year-round, including basic vehicle maintenance and small engine repair. All work performed in the auto shop is supervised by an experienced mechanic.

CONSTRUCTION

Penrith prides itself on the hand-crafted atmosphere of the farm. Many of the buildings and all of the landscaping have been built by the hands of past residents and employees. Year-round we offer countless opportunities for clients to engage in construction projects, thus contributing to the enduring Penrith community.

CULINARY SKILLS

Clients with an interest in the culinary arts are presented with prospects for learning about cooking and baking skills from highly experienced individuals. Clients will prepare meals using a variety of cooking methods including: wood-fired stove, open-flame, and conventional appliances. This aspect of the program will impart knowledge beyond what is gained through the Independent Living Skills Program.

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY

The animals living on Penrith Farms offer yet another possibility for clients to expand their knowledge and build important skills. The farm is home to several species: rabbits, honey bees, cattle, poultry, horses, dogs, cats, and April the Donkey. Clients develop many life skills caring for the animals: responsibility, teamwork, and commitment. In addition to the opportunity for vocational enrichment, countless studies have demonstrated remarkable therapeutic benefits associated with animal contact and care.
